Due, in part, to the era's great artists — Frida Khalo, Diego Rivera, and writer and painter Gerardo Murillo "Dr. Atl" — who celebrated indigenous art in an atmosphere of post-revolutionary national pride, Mexican folk art was popular among the country's elite. These days, Mexicans with pockets deep enough for Bernabe's work are considered thoroughly uninterested in Mexican folk art. Hall says that is changing. When he opened a high-end Mexican crafts shop in San Miguel in 2001, more than 90 percent of his customers were foreigners. Thanks to private-sector promotion of folk art - like the Great Masters program - Hall says his Mexican clientele has since increased to 30 percent of his business, and he sees more Mexicans buying it at the country's major fairs and artisan competitions. One of our favorite Mexican cities, San Miguel de Allende, is both exquisitely preserved and utterly cosmopolitan. The expatriate community here—of some 2,000 artists, collectors, restaurateurs, and conservationists—has taken over many of the 16th- and 17th-century ocher palacios. And around every corner is a chic store, a hidden garden or gallery, or a culinary gem. It's been three years since our last report from SMA, and as travel agent Lisa Lindblad discovered, several new openings (as well as some unrivaled classics) are keeping the city as vibrant as ever.
